Language Tuition Nottingham Community (CIC) supports projects that promote language learning, inclusion, and community connection across Nottingham and the East Midlands.
At Language Tuition Nottingham, we believe language learning is more than the study of grammar and vocabulary. It is a powerful starting point for friendships, confidence, and community participation. Language is a bridge between people, cultures, and communities.
Alongside our language school, we run Language Tuition Nottingham Community (CIC) — a not-for-profit initiative dedicated to supporting migrants, refugees, and other underserved communities in Nottingham.
Communities grow stronger when people learn together.
We do this by creating learning spaces where people feel: Welcome · Valued · Connected · Empowered
Here are a few examples of the work that we have been doing in the community:
We have worked with partner organisations across the East Midlands to deliver English language programmes for people arriving through humanitarian resettlement schemes, including those displaced by conflict.
These programmes have included:
These classes aim to help learners develop the language skills needed to access education, employment, and everyday life in the UK.
We have also supported teachers from migrant and refugee backgrounds to develop their professional skills and continue their careers in education.
Through training and mentoring, participants have been able to work towards internationally recognised Level 5 and Level 6 English language teaching qualifications.
Several participants have gone on to teach within their own communities, helping to expand access to English language learning across Nottingham and the wider Midlands.
We have developed training programmes for community ESOL assistants and volunteers who support English classes in community settings.
These programmes focus on:
Our aim is to help strengthen the local network of community-based English language support.
We have also supported a number of work placements for local secondary school students who are interested in careers related to languages, teaching, or international education.
These placements give students a structured opportunity to experience the daily work of a language school, including observing lessons, supporting classroom activities, and learning about how language education helps people integrate and build new opportunities.
Through these placements, students gain valuable insight into teaching, education, and cross-cultural communication, while also contributing to the welcoming learning environment we aim to create.
Alongside continuing and expanding the projects described above, we are currently exploring several new initiatives.
One area of focus is community cohesion, with projects aimed at bringing refugees and local residents together through shared activities that encourage interaction, understanding, and mutual support.
We are also developing initiatives to expand access to Spanish language learning for local residents, particularly for individuals who may not normally have access to language education. Through these projects, we hope to create additional opportunities for cultural exchange and community connection.
As our work grows, we will continue to develop practical projects that combine language learning, skills development, and community engagement.
We are proud to work with a number of partners who have supported our work so far, including Flying Cows Learning, Nottingham City Council’s Ukraine Community Fund, and East Midlands Councils.
As our community projects continue to grow, we welcome collaboration with new partners, local organisations, community groups, and volunteers who share our commitment to language learning, inclusion, and community connection.
We are also interested in working with foundations, charities, and local initiatives that would like to develop projects supporting refugees and migrants across Nottingham and the wider East Midlands.
Members of the public can also support our work through small donations that help us provide language learning opportunities for people who may not otherwise have access to them.
For example:
Every contribution helps us expand access to language education and strengthen community connections.
